Founding partner Linda Humphrey was looking for a comfortable brokerage to call home, and not finding a good match for her vision of real estate sales of the future. The old, so-called "bricks and mortar" brokerage model was hopelessly bogged down in the past. Cut rate brokerages seemed more interested in recruiting huge numbers of agents to maximize their own bottom line than in providing quality service to the community. Limited service brokerages, often out of town, provided no apparent service other than entree to the mls. Many brokers, probably making similar observations, had created their own mom-and-pop operations in order to stay in business, but did not seem to have any clear focus. The need for a small, service-oriented and tech-savvy brokerage was clear.
What's the problem with traditional real estate brokerage companies? For starters, high overhead. The need for multiple, large offices, with desks for every agent and equally large support staffs, has been an albatross around the necks of these companies in this current market. Traditional advertising is expensive and not particularly effective. Large numbers of agents must be recruited in the hopes that some will be successful enough to keep the ship afloat. Quality control suffers. Many of these companies have been in business for many years, and see no reason to change the way they operate.
